Darwin's Garden: An Evolutionary Adventure
At the New York Botanical Garden

“Charles Darwin is best known for his theory of evolution and other natural history achievements, but little is known about his enduring and insightful work with plants and the important role they played in formulating his ideas. Yet from cradle to grave, botany played a pivotal role in Darwin's life. From counting peonies and playing under the apple trees in his father's garden as a boy to collecting "all the plants in flower" on his famous voyage to the Galápagos as a young man and testing the sex and sensitivity of plants at his home, Down House, in his later years, plants were a lifelong preoccupation for Darwin.

Darwin's Garden: An Evolutionary Adventure explores the untold story of Darwin's botanical influences, his research, and his contribution to our understanding of plants, and ultimately, of life in general. The exhibition is featured in three Botanical Garden venues and includes an "evolutionary tour" of living plants that demonstrate key points on the tree of life, which links all living beings through a common ancestry.

A symposium with leading Darwin scholars headlines the list of events and programs scheduled throughout the duration of the show.”

Murakami at the Brooklyn Museum

"The most comprehensive retrospective to date of the work of internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami includes more than ninety works in various media that span the artist’s entire career, installed in more than 18,500 square feet of gallery space.

Born in Tokyo in 1962, Murakami is one of the most influential and acclaimed artists to have emerged from Asia in the late twentieth century, creating a wide-ranging body of work that consciously bridges fine art, design, animation, fashion, and popular culture. He received a Ph.D. from the prestigious Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he was trained in the school of traditional Japanese painting known as Nihonga, a nineteenth-century mixture of Western and Eastern styles. However, the prevailing popularity of anime (animation) and manga (comic books) directed his interest toward the art of animation because, as he has said, “it was more representative of modern day Japanese life.” American popular culture in the form of animation, comics, and fashion are among the influences on his work, which includes painting, sculpture, installation, and animation, as well as a wide range of collectibles, multiples, and commercial products.

The exhibition © MURAKAMI explores the self-reflexive nature of Murakami’s oeuvre by focusing on earlier work produced between 1992 and 2000 in which the artist attempts to explore his own reality through an investigation of branding and identity, as well as through self-portraiture created since 2000. Two works examining these subjects were a part of a group show, My Reality: Contemporary Art and the Culture of Japanese Animation, presented at the Brooklyn Museum in 2001.

Among the works included in this large-scale survey tracing the trajectory of Murakami’s artistic development are many of his acclaimed sculpture figures including the 23-foot-high Tongari-kun (2003–4); Miss Ko2 (1997), a long-legged waitress who has become one of the artist’s signature characters; and Hiropon (1997), a Japanese girl jumping a rope created by milk spurting from her gargantuan breasts. Among the paintings on view will be Tan Tan Bo (2001), as well as Tan Tan Bo Puking—a.k.a. Gero Tan (2002). "

Whitney Museum Biennial 2008

“The 2008 Biennial, the seventy-fourth in the series of Whitney Annual and Biennial exhibitions held since 1932, presents eighty-one artists working at a time when art production is above all characterized by heterogeneity and dispersal. However, within the enormously differentiated field that we (perhaps absurdly) continue to yoke under the term “contemporary art,” certain prevalent modes of working and thematic concerns are particularly germane to the moment.

Many of the projects presented in the exhibition explore fluid communication structures and systems of exchange that index larger social, political, and economic contexts, often aiming to invert the more object-oriented operations of the art market. Recurring concerns involve a nuanced investigation of social, domestic, and public space and its translation into form—primarily sculptural, but also photographic and cinematic. Many artists reconcile rigorous formal and conceptual underpinnings with personal narratives or historical references. While numerous works demonstrate an explicit or implicit engagement with art history, particularly the legacy of modernism, as well as a pronounced interest in questioning the staging and display of art, others chart the topography and architecture of the decentralized American city and take inspiration from postindustrial landscapes and urban decay. Using humble or austere materials or employing calculated messiness or modes of deconstruction, they present works distinguished by their poetic sensibility as they discover pockets of beauty in sometimes unexpected places.

There is an evident trend toward creating work of an ephemeral, event-based character, in the form of music and other performance, movement workshops, radio broadcasts, publishing projects, community-based activities, film screenings, culinary gatherings, or lectures. Such projects do not stand in opposition to institutions; rather, considering each of these multiple platforms equally important, artists show objects in the museum or gallery even as they seek ways to complicate and transcend its parameters. In this spirit, from March 6–23 the 2008 Biennial continues at Park Avenue Armory with an extensive program of events and performances.

You’re seeing the wear and tear of time on objects that aren’t afforded special “art” status, and yet you also get a sense of government as somehow artistic.
Johnny Aiello’s “Aiello & Venus”

Johhny Aiello’s “Aiello&Venus,” a retrospective of 100 works—paintings, drawings and prints—will be presented at the C3 Gallery in Soho, opening November 9 and running until December 14. The opening and show are open to the public.

The opening is Friday, November 9, from 6pm to 10pm, at 161 Avenue of the Americas (Spring Street), second floor. Please direct inquiries to Monte Bartlett at 212 431 1262.

The gallery is located at the headquarters of architecture and branding firm Pompei A.D. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10am-5pm, and Saturday 12pm-4pm. The gallery will be closed from Wednesday, November 21 until Monday, November 26.

As the title suggests, women are the focus of the exhibit and Aiello’s expertise in various styles. The selection of works from various periods of his nearly five-decade career gives this collection of nudes the distinction of being quite varied while also cohering as a single body of work.

Pompei A.D. founder Ron Pompei personally curated Aiello’s work for this 45-year survey. According to Pompei, “The immense diversity of Aiello’s work awakens the innate potential to appreciate our own erupting visions and worlds unfolding in a primordial grove down the lane from where we live. We seldom remember the path leading there from our greener years. Aiello brings it around again.”

Best known today for his stunning urban panoramas of Manhattan and the extreme close-ups of natural objects he took during his 20 years as a staff photographer for Life Magazine, Feininger began his career in Stockholm in the 1930s. Trained at the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany, he moved to Paris and then Stockholm when the Nazis came to power and quickly established himself as one of Sweden’s foremost architectural photographers. The Stockholm photographs reflect his architectural training as well as Bauhaus theories of photography considered provocative by the Swedish establishment in the 1930s. During Feininger’s years in Stockholm he developed the techniques and themes he was to explore throughout his long career, honing his photographic vision in a city he considered superior to other European and American capitals from a photographer’s point of view. His carefully-composed, sharply-focused street scenes and harbor panoramas—often taken with a super-telephoto camera of his own design—demonstrate the great technical skill that astonished American audiences in later decades. The exhibition is organized by the Stockholm City Museum (Stockholms stadsmuseum).”

Now until November 7th
Tuesday-Saturday, 12-6 pm

Scandinavia House – The Nordic Center in America
58 Park Avenue at 38th Street

Blood Manor

“Blood Manor is a first class Haunted Attraction comprised of approximately 5,000 square feet of themed rooms, corridors, and a labyrinth of passageways designed to maximize one’s fears.”

7:30pm - 1:00am Thursday & Sunday
7:30pm - 2:00am Friday & Saturday

542 W. 27th Street
212-290-2825

Seher Shah - Jihad Pop

“Viewers never approach a work of art with an innocent eye. This is certainly the case when viewing the work of Seher Shah, whose detailed drawings and prints merge diverse iconographies. Having lived multinationally, between Pakistan, the UK, Belgium, and the US, Shah has absorbed more perspective than most. Combining that experience with her dazzling aesthetic sensibility and draftsmanship, Shah produces drawings that are as smart and relevant as they are beautiful.

The title Jihad Pop engages with two loaded words. They are words that have been loaded by the media to imply that Muslims are extremists and Americans are facile. Yet Jihad by definition does not call for armed conflict, and pop culture is not the harbinger of American consumerism. The work in this show revives the traditional definition of jihad, of an inner struggle to resolve contradictions. In both the media’s and the traditional definitions, both jihad and pop are self replicating, finding resolution through their own inner logics. However, the drawings of Shah find resolution in more than one world, where, in theory, only contradiction should exist. The black cube (the holy Kaaba) unfolds into a cross; Islamic ornamentation takes on the characteristics of animation or graffiti; architectural traditions destroy each other and reform; childhood snapshots get confused with fairytale – until Shah’s migratory drawings collect her memory into collective symbols familiar to everyone and to none, into the Black Star of Jihad Pop.”

Momenta Art
359 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn
Reception: Friday, September 7th, 7-9 pm
September 7th through October 8th, 2007

The Art Parade

“Deitch Projects, Creative Time and Paper Magazine are pleased to announce the third annual Art Parade.

July 12th, – August 10th, 2007

Pompei A.D.’s C3 Gallery is pleased to announce Jeesoo Lee’s first solo show in New York. After graduating from Sungshin Women’s University in her native Seoul, Korea, Ms. Lee moved to New York in 2004 to complete her studies at State University of New York at New Paltz. She graduated in 2006 with a Master’s degree in Fine Art.

Jeesoo Lee’s forceful yet delicate works often evolve into vast installations that can fill entire rooms and reveal a whole new understanding of the material world. She rarely buys materials at the store but uses scraps of metal and plastic wire, string, copper foil, nails, paper, cardboard, and textiles that she finds in dumpsters and in the street and then weaves and works into wild, seemingly chaotic artworks. Her work is process-oriented and she never makes sketches or blueprints. Drawing on her emotions, which frequently change over the course of a work, she is suspicious of too much intellectualizing. People close to her and classical music often inspire her but these sources, too, change and cannot be reduced to a common denominator. Asked to name influences or models from art history, she mentions Cy Twombly as an artist who has been important for her. Despite their apparent painterlyness, Ms. Lee says her works are rooted in drawing or, as she also calls it, ‘drawing with materials’.

In her current exhibition ‘she’ Jeesoo Lee presents drawings and installations that she made over the last two years.

Curated by Marion Wild

(translation by Dieter Kuhn)

Exhibit Review 6/9/07

On Saturday, 6/9/07, I visited several important exhibits in New York City. The following is a highlight of the current crop.

RICHARD SERRA: By far the most ambitious, monumental, and immersive work out there, the Richard Serra retrospective at MoMA is this summer's blockbuster. Try to time your visit when the maddening crowds are at a minimum (good luck). The two pieces in the courtyard are beautiful (see photos), as they catch the natural light and frame the surrounding midtown views. More interesting, however, are in the interior galleries. Here, Serra has two new pieces that are logical steps in his work. He links the organic and fluid spirals of his recent work into continuous pathways. One can honestly get lost in these installations, literally and emotionally.

TOBIAS PUTRIH @ Max Protech: Simple material and connections taken to the extreme. The furniture "language" is impressive in these quantities and jumbled combinations.

Here are a few of our recommendations:

Generation 1.5

Generation 1.5 is a new exhibit at the Queens Museum of Art featuring the work of Pompei A.D. Studio Director Randir Singh’s wife Seher Shah. The exhibition examines whether artists of the 1.5 generation (people who come to America when they are in their adolescence) present a particular orientation in their work as they are confronted by issues of immigration, cultural dislocation, memory, hybridity, acceptance, and exile in their everyday lives.

Participating Artists: Ellen Harvey, Pablo Helguera, Emily Jacir, Lee Mingwei, Shirin Neshat, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Nari Ward and Seher Shah.

Reception: Sunday, June 10th, 3pm -6pm
Exhibition through June 14th, 2007

Queens Museum of Art
New York Building
Flushing Meadows Corona Park
Queens, New York

The Year of Magical Thinking on Broadway

“The Year of Magical Thinking,” a new play written by Joan Didion based on her celebrated memoir, is coming to Broadway in a strictly limited, twenty-four-week engagement, starring one of the world's greatest living actresses, the Academy Award and Tony Award winner Vanessa Redgrave.

Directed by Oscar nominee David Hare (The Hours), this heart-rending and ultimately inspiring new work is already the most anticipated of the spring season.

Redgrave re-lives that unimaginable night in Didion’s life when her husband of 40 years, fellow writer John Gregory Dunne, died suddenly of a massive coronary as they sat down to dinner in their New York apartment. With raw candor and a storyteller’s gift for the absurd, Redgrave tells Didion’s story of unfathomable grief as lived in a thousand details.

THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING is a love letter to a child and a tribute to an extraordinary, unconventional marriage, told with raw candor and a brilliant storyteller's gift for the absurd.”

Now through June 30th, 2007
Wednesday through Sunday 8pm
Thursday and Sunday matinee 2pm

Limited availability of tickets $165-$210

Francesco Clemente Retrospective at Deitch Projects

From May 3rd through June 2nd, Deitch Projects will present a retrospective exhibition of Francesco Clemente's work from the 1970's. More than one hundred pieces will represent Clemente’s work. His work was influenced by the political and cultural situation in Rome in the 70's, but also by music, particularly American music and art.

It’s fascinating to explore his concept of how the body is connected to the idea of travel, and how he often represents his works through paper, an ephemeral and 'flowing media' itself.

Escape the City: Climbing, Hiking, and Biking in the Gunks

Just six miles outside New Paltz in upstate New York, The Shawangunk Mountains offer some of the best climbing cliffs on the East Coast, as well as hiking and biking trails along the escarpment with spectacular views of the Hudson River Valley and farmlands. I think it is the simplicity and peacefulness of nature that is so healing. When you hike up to these paths, you immediately feel transported. After a vigorous New York City week, there’s no better way to restore your mind, body and soul.

The Shawangunk Mountains - 90 miles north of New York City.

For more information check out:

http://www.gunks.com/

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/0509/sports/rock_climbing.html

$15 admission into the park for climbers
Photo: Arturo Quinones coming over the roof

Recommended art exhibits and other cultural events

Inspiration comes in many forms, and in this category you‘ll find some of our recommendations for art exhibits, theater, music performances, and other cultural happenings. Since our firm is located in New York, most of the entries here are NYC-centric. We do like to travel, though, so we’ll include our recommendations for things to do in various cultural hubs the world over. Our “Art Guide” entries offer an excellent overview of current exhibits in major museums and galleries in New York as well as other cities in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Feel free to download the complete Art Guide listing in PDF format to help plan your creative excursions.
-Art Guide: Manhattan Museums
-Art Guide: Manhattan Galleries
-Art Guide: Other U.S. Locations
-Art Guide: Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn
-Art Guide: Asia
-Art Guide: Europe
