Bio: Ron Pompei, Principal and Creative Director

Ron Pompei began his creative exploration as an artist, creating light art installations and sculptures that Philadelphia Magazine cited as “changing the face of Philadelphia.” Since then, as principal of the New York City based creative services firm Pompei A.D., Ron has gone on to do equally ground breaking work in architecture, design, experience branding, and cultural entrepreneurship. Ron’s design philosophy is centered on C3: Commerce, Culture, and Community, the so-called “third place” outside of home and work, where social interaction is facilitated by commerce and culture. He believes C3 can revitalize many suburban and urban venues and transform them into meeting places where people can shop, learn and socialize.

Bio: Zak Wehagen, Art Director

Zak Wehagen never had a vocational epiphany; he never received a scroll from Apollo, the Greek god of art, calling him to his profession. He simply followed his passions, which led him to study painting at Ohio University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1994. He continued his education at the Maryland Institute College of Art, earning a Master of Fine Arts in 1997.

Before joining Pompei A.D. in late 2004, Wehagen designed displays for Anthropologie, one of Pompei A.D.’s current clients. He also traveled the country, coordinating and designing displays for store openings. As the Art Director at Pompei A.D., Wehagen still works with Anthropologie, as well as Origins, L’Oréal, Liz Claiborne and others. He focuses on visual nuances like finishes, materials, textures and layouts, while the Studio Directors concentrate on architecture and the construction process. In his work, Wehagen strives to achieve the simple, visceral quality yet complex vocabulary of Antoni Tàpies, whose paintings manipulate material and the movement of material. Wehagen also admires the sculptor Anish Kapoor who creates lush, rich surfaces using pigments like sand.

Bio: Randhir Singh, Studio Director

While in high school in the Philippines, Randhir Singh took one design class and was hooked. In the summer of his junior year, he took a creative discovery program in architecture at Harvard University, fanning the spark of his passion for architecture and design.

After high school, Randhir moved to the United States and enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. He graduated in 2000 with two degrees: a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Architecture. He then accepted a job from O’Neil Langan Architects, working with clients such as Diesel, Burberry, Macy's and more. Randhir left O’Neil Langan in 2004 for Pompei A.D., where he is now a Studio Director. At Pompei A.D., he appreciates the creative work environment and the flexibility he can exercise with clients like Anthropologie. For inspiration, he turns to big names like Louis Kahn and Libeskind, as well as smaller names like Smith-Miller Hawkinson and Todd Williams.

Bio: Ellen Depoorter, Studio Director

Ellen Depoorter, a Studio Director at Pompei A.D., joined the firm in 2000. Her work on behalf of clients includes Urban Outfitters in the United States and Europe, HealthSpring HMOs and Old Navy. Depoorter especially enjoys her work at Pompei A.D. because the variation of her clients and daily tasks makes every day a challenge, and every day she grows professionally.

Depoorter finds inspiration in art more than in architecture. The German painter Gerhard Richter, internationally renowned for his photograph-paintings with allusions to minimalism, especially influenced her as a young girl. She also admires the work of Luc Tuymans, a painter from Depoorter’s home country of Belgium.
